    Apple iPhone SE

My partner wants to buy an iPhone but the latest models are probably more than she's looking for. I noticed a couple of days ago that Costco has the iPhone SE 32GB for $299, would this be suitable for a Freedom HMP? She definitely doesn't want to give up her plan for a phone, would this be worth it? She doesn't do much other than Instagram and WhatsApp.

I suggest using this site to check phone compatibility. It is not perfect, but very accurate for popular phone brands such as Apple.

Not sure it will work with their LTE network but it will work with a Freedom. I had an iPhone 5 working on Wind. SE will def work.

I'm an android guy so my knowledge of the Apple experience on FM is third hand. However, here are a few thoughts based on what I found.

TL/DR - looks like it will work but will be missing coverage of significant bands.

According to Apple, there are two iPhone SE versions and they offer different frequency band support. Comparing what they say is supported to what Freedom says it offers, here is the matchup.

    A1662:
    LTE - B4 & B13
    3G/UTMS/HSPA - B4 (AWS 1700)

    A1723:
    LTE - B4, B7 & B41
    3G/UTMS/HSPA - B4 (AWS 1700)

To complicate things further, Freedom's frequency band coverage is different in different areas. For example, I think B41 is something only available in one pocket of the country and B7 is rolling out in urban area first?

They are really marketing B66 and in some areas, B13 as the best options for speed and coverage. B13 will be important in future as the "low frequency" band that offers better penetration, but right now is still rolling out.

Next speed issue is carrier aggregation. I don't know if the iPhone SE is CA compatible, but if so, theb the device connects to two (or more) LTE bands at the same time to maximize speeds. Having limited bands available means the likelihood of aggregation is going to be very slim.

User "acoalt" on Reddit did a very good job of summing all this up (link below). It is dated Sept 2018 so not too old but...

I would check what frequencies FM uses in your area, and then check the bands on the device you are considering for the best fit. What might be best in Ottawa could be different from what will work best in Edmonton because of the regional band differences and the unfortunate fact that there are different versions of iPhone SE's.

    Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies! I'm guessing it's probably better for her to look for an iPhone8 or up, or at least when you can get a deal on them.

Hey? My iPhone 5S works fine with Freedom

    The SE also would work
    Koodo $40 Canada Wide + 8GB + 1000 Intl LD
    Public $120 Province Wide + 12GB - $6 Autopay - $12 Loyalty - $45 Refer = $19 per Month
    Freedom $35 ($37-BTS) North America Wide + 8GB + 1GB Roaming

Erm... according to Apple there are *3* iPhone SE
1662 is the "good" version OP should look for (works on every Canadian carrier and most US carriers)
1723 is the "weird" global version (CDMA support for networks like Sprint)
1724 is China only won't work anywhere else

No, A1723 is the Canadian model. I’m using mine right now. I bought it directly from an Apple Store in Toronto.
TELUS: Unlimited Canada-wide Talk, Text and 15+10 GB Data
Koodo: Unlimited Canada-wide Talk, Text and 8 GB Data
chatr: $60 Unlimited In-zone Talk, Text and Data (20 GB at 3G speed)

Unless this changed with the more recent sell offs
They all used to use the 1662 model

Either way both would work tho
