In my GV app if I go to the 'about' page in the settings, when I am leaving the 'about' page, I see, for only a split second, 'Hangouts' written in the settings, similar to how calls and messages are written, but it says hangouts.

Even when I am just starting the settings page I see those words.

I may not have been paying attention to this in the past, but if this is new, then it may be indicative of the hangouts voip feature integration.

I looked again, and now not only does the hangouts tab show for only the smallest of moments, but the 'Make calls' in the calls section show up.

Has anyone else seen this?
And what do you think it means?

I only just installed the GV app on Friday to test it with a new GV # before I switch from using Hangouts with my primary GV #s on my mobile devices.

I did NOT notice this on Friday or Saturday as I was checking the GV app out.

This morning, I DO notice that "Hangouts" flashes momentarily as you describe.

Do you have the beta VoIP functionality in your GV app yet? I don't yet.

I've noticed "hangouts" pop up as well. I do not have wifi-calling on my account (waiting patiently).

It's been happening for the past week or so, ever since the wifi-calling started rolling out.

I do have wifi calling on my account although I haven't used it yet. I don't see the word "Hangouts" at any time when I look in Settings and tap the hamburger icon and tap About.

Maybe it's visible on slower phones due to lag? Can't say I ever noticed it.

I'd guess that's correct. All of my devices are slow, so I see it on all of them, but it's less noticeable on my less-slow devices.
