    Band 3 in South Florida?

I noticed band 3 popping up at Fort Lauderdale airport today. I'm assuming it's an error on the Network Cell Info app? Also noticing a lot of LTE band 5.

Band 3 isn’t utilized in the US. It was most likely a app error.

I've seen some apps erroneously report band 3 when there is carrier aggregation happening.

For some reason android shows band 66 as band 3. If you ever see that, it's band 66.

AT&T has a lot of band 5 in south Florida because the own both licenses for CLR there.

    Thanks for all the replies.

On another note...... what does LTE+ mean? I don't ever remember seeing that before.

It's a bug in some Android iterations. https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/89wftc/band_3_what/

    LTE+ is usually carrier aggregation.

Here's a link to the long-standing Android bug report about this problem: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/37136986
This has been open for years, so it probably won't be fixed anytime soon.

Basically all EARFCN numbers above 2^16 (65536), which include all of Band 66 (expanded AWS) and Band 71 (600MHz) wrap around to zero at that value, giving a false frequency and band indication that can show either B2 or B3, depending on the specific channels.

T-mobile in my area operates a 20MHz LTE carrier on downlink EARFCN 66786 (2145MHz dn/1745 up), which aliases down to bogus EARFCN 1250 (66786-65536) that most apps show as "Band 3". When I first saw this, I thought someone at T-mo was going to be in big trouble with the FCC!

Similarly, Verizon here operates on EARFCN 66536 (2120MHz / 1720 up) which gets mangled to EARFCN 1000 (1970MHz / 1890 up) in the middle of Band 2. (AT&T has no AWS licenses here in Northeast FL) Neither VZW nor TMO have anything nearby in the expanded AWS range that's covered by B66 but not B4, but I guess they activated B66 MFBI everywhere anyway for its better carrier-aggregation support.

Developers of some apps, such as SignalCheck Pro (and Lite) have added workarounds that try to recognize and correct bogus bands that don't make sense for the active MCC/MNC, like Band 3 in the US, but this doesn't work for my Verizon example since VZW really could be on 1970MHz PCS in some areas. You'd have to check area-specific licensing to know that was wrong.

The only app that seems immune to this is the root-only Network Signal Guru, which bypasses the broken Android API by reading directly from modem/radio registers. It only works on certain Qualcomm chipsets, though, and besides requiring root, recent versions have become deliberately annoying with obtrusive self-advertising, opening to a random page, etc. in an effort to push the pricey subscription that's something like $50/month (and older ones expire, so rolling back the APK won't work). I'd be happy to pay a one-time fee. This app does also have the ability to lock out specific bands, so you in areas not using expanded AWS you could disable B66 to force it back to B4 and avoid overflowing EARFCN's.
