Question iPhone SIM in plastic tracfone card

I got a iPhone and the SIM is in a credit card shaped plastic card held in place with two tabs. Do I need to cut the tabs with an exacto knife? Or can I wiggle/twist it free? I'm trying to figure out how to free the SIM safely so it doesn't break.

For illustration, it's just like in this video (except he doesn't show actually detaching the SIM from the plastic card):

Some SIMs are multi-punch (smaller one nested inside bigger ones). Just pop out the correct size that you need. No knife needed.

This one isn't multi-size. It's exactly like what is shown in the video I linked.

The Tracfone SIM "credit cards" I have seen have a single nano SIM or a double-cut, mini-micro SIM in the card.

Doesn't matter. Pop the SIM out. No knife required. I put my thumbnails together at the break point and flex with my fingers on the other side.

I managed to free the SIM and install it into the iPhone and get it activated. It wasn't as difficult as I thought to free it from the "credit card". The plastic tabs holding it in place were thicker than shown in the video, so I was concerned it might be a problem. But it popped out cleanly without any trouble.

Just wondering... is it LOCKED to TracFone, or can I freely swap SIM cards with other carriers? I assume it is not an unlocked phone, since I got it from TracFone, but the box looked just like a regular iPhone that you would get from Apple, so just wondering.

Most likely it's locked to Tracfone. When TF was selling refurbished TF-branded iPhones quite cheap, people who wanted to use them with other carriers had to use something called RSIM to get around the lock.

Well the one I have is neither TF branded nor refurb. It appears to be identical to what you get direct from Apple.

If you want to know for sure, put in a non-Tracfone SIM. If you get an "Invalid SIM" message, it's locked to TF.

It seems like you're contradicting yourself. Can you clarify?

I got the phone from TracFone but it APPEARS the same as what you get from Apple. No TF branding of any kind. Does that clarify?

    Ah, yes. Thanks.

That IS how the iPhones from TF come. But they are locked to TF for the full 12 months. Also, at least for the Vzw version, you have to activate it with the SIM card that comes in it and use it for 12 months straight to have a chance to have it unlocked in 12 months.

    Wow really? OK.

I bought it at a discount price that they offered to me. I have three phones which are affected by the VoLTE switchover, and each of those phone numbers qualify for some sort of discount pricing on a VoLTE compliant replacement phone. This was one of those.

When I activated it online, I had a choice to keep the same phone number as the non-compliant phone which I used to get the pricing (and transfer the benefits/buckets) or get a new number and keep the non-compliant phone active. I chose the latter because I'd like to get a few more months use out of the old phone before the switchover happens in December.

If you want to find out the sim lock status report, purchase a GSX report. Search your favourite browser for more info about GSX.

If it’s locked down by tracfone then the report will look like this for the status of the sim lock.

Initial Activation: 2360 US TracFone (ATT/TMO/VZW) Locked Policy
Next Tether: 2360 US TracFone (ATT/TMO/VZW) Locked Policy
    Unlocked: FALSE
    Unlock Date: Not Available
