    Questions about AT&T Prepaid

I bought a prepaid AT&T phone on clearance. I have it activated. My original plan was to pay the most basic plan ($.25 per minute/message), not really use the phone and wait 6 months to have it unlocked and use it on Verizon. Will that work? Is there any other way around 6 months?

Most AT&T phones are not compatible with Verizon, only the Motos, iPhones, and Pixels... But there are two ways around it. One is if you have an AT&T post-paid account in good standing for over 6 months, you can put that SIM in it and unlock it immediately. Second is pay for an unlock code online.

Current Personal Phone: Google Pixel 3a XL (AT&T PrePaid)

Other phones "in the family": Nokia 6.1 (AT&T), Huawei P20

Okay. So if I pay for a code to unlock it, I can get it unlocked but only use it on the AT&T network (not Verizon)? Just want to make sure I understand.

Verizon uses CDMA and LTE technology still and won't allow VoLTE only for 3rd party devices... Most AT&T phones use GSM and LTE only (except the few I noted above) so they don't have the correct radios to work on Verizon's network.

Which phone specifically are we talking about?

It doesn't have a CDMA radio... not compatible with Verizon.

That won't matter by the end of the year though.

But will it do Verizon HD Voice/VoLTE? I doubt that it will.

Verizon does not allow non-Verizon devices to access VoLTE or WiFi calling.

So just to put it in layman's terms, unless it's a universally compatible phone (like most new iPhones, Galaxy S9 / S10, Pixel, some Moto Z devices) with all of the frequency bands of the the carriers, most unlocked ATT phones won't work on Verizon, but Verizon phones will work on ATT (for the most part).

It will still cost you a minimum of about $60.
$25 for 90 days before it expires. Then another $25 for another 90 days. Then $10 for another month. Though you can reduce the cost some by buying PINs on sale from someplace like callingmart or Target (and save on the taxes).

I bought an iPhone SE earlier this year on sale, and have it on the $2/day account to keep it active. I've only used $2 worth of service so far for the first day. As long as you don't send a text message or answer the phone, the $2 fee isn't activated.
iPhone X is my current primary phone. I have older model iPhones and Moto phones available on other lines. Currently prepaid, though would consider postpaid on right plan.

This phone looks like it only has 5 LTE bands from what I've been able to find. Some ATT only, so limited data on Verizon.
