T-Mobile sim in prepaid T-Mo carrier phone? (Walmart Family Mobile, MetroPCS, etc.)

    Hey guys,

I bought a Wal-Mart Family Mobile phone 4 years ago and was able to put a T-Mobile sim and use it out of the box. The screen broke today so I'm looking for an inexpensive phone to replace it.

I've done a lot of searching and it seems that pre-paid carriers are locking devices unless you are a subscriber directly to their service (i.e. if you are a T-Mobile user, you can't use the Wal-Mart phone or MetroPCS phone). The only thing I've found for certain is that this is true of Simple Mobile after their acquisition by Tracfone.

Does anyone have RECENT experience popping a T-Mo sim into a Wal-Mart Family (or MetroPCS) phone?

And, a follow-up question: if the devices are restricted, has anybody used an unlocking apps/eBay services to unlock a phone?

    Thank you in advance.

A Metro PCS phone has to be unlocked before you can use it on T-Mobile.

What is your budget, you may have other options.

Was looking at LG Stylo 4 which is 1/2 the price if it's MetroPCS/Walmart Family. Want something with a decent camera (most phones these days have those I'm guessing), large screen/battery, but otherwise I just text/call/browse the web and use Snapchat to talk to my nieces/nephews. Only considering it since my other phone was an LG Stylo and it served me well.
edit: Realized I didn't answer your question. Was looking to spend $100-$150.

You have lots of options. Metropcs phones can be unlocked for a fee by third parties, and there are lots of unlocked phones available. In the next couple of days Amazon will likely have good deals on the Moto G7 variants. A G6 is a decent choice as well.

I just looked, Amazon has the Stylo 4 unlocked for $159 if you are set on that. They also have the Nokia 6 for a little less.

If you plan to get a branded phone, you’re better off getting and unlocking a Metro phone.
Can’t guarantee Walmart Family Mobile phones are unlocked for T-Mobile, since they became a Tracfone Brand around the time you bought your last phone.

Thank you for the recommendations. Can you provide any insight as to why they'll go on sale? Just due to Amazon Prime day or a new version coming out?

Edit: Well, what a coincidence... I was browsing Prime deals and they have LG Stylo 4 on sale for $160 from $300. Might just go for it.
