New T-Mobile $3/month plan accounts will be managed by Ultra Mobile

I just saw this on Reddit. Apparently new $3 plan and Tourist plan accounts will be managed by Ultra Mobile. There are some user unfriendly elements to this change:
    • You can only activate the $3 plan at T-Mobile stores, so no more online activations with cheap eBay T-Mobile SIMs.
    • No more domestic voice and text roaming.
    • You can only refill your account by purchasing PINs at T-Mobile stores. Ultra PINs do not work. T-Mobile PINs as sold by Target, Callingmart, etc. probably won't either.

See https://www.ultramobile.com/paygo/ for confirmation and more details.

The tourist plans will also go this route. I'm wondering if this is a way for T-Mobile to get out of the prepaid business with their name eventually (i.e. T-Mobile postpaid and Metro and that's it). Plus, for them this sort of gets rid of all the people who use that plan for parking numbers to port in and out of other places (unfortunately).

    I didn't think of this.
I thought TM is making this convoluted to get rid of it's users & do away with the plan itself.

Any news on Legacy Gold plans?
I have two that I've had for several years only topping up with $10 every year for the roll over but not actually using it.

I have a very high balance on them also due to the ebay guy a few years ago selling the Legacy Gold SIM cards with $97+ on them.

I'm basically never really going to use them so would there be a problem if I just converted them both to the $3 a month plan and used them or not and let them run themselves out?

There shouldn't be a problem with converting your legacy gold to a $3 month plan. I did that several years ago, Customer Service will move the credit over to the $3 plan, and you are on your way.

Wow this change is pretty rough.

I called UltraMobile and it seems you can't even port-in a number to their version of the $3/mo PayGo plan.

Does anyone know a similarly low priced alternative for low minute/text usage and no data on a non-AT&T network?

This was the recommended plan for port out/back scenarios. For example, I was thinking of porting out of and back into AT&T Prepaid to take advantage of their 25GB prepaid promo. Is that $10 PagePlus plan now the least expensive way to accomplish it?

A postpaid VZW phone will, if it's in good standing (not having been reported stolen or bill in arrears, other wrinkles, etc.). Prepaid VZW, no. The upfront purchase terms have to be met (either time used in service on VZW prepaid, or an up front payment to satisfy requirement - a "ransom").

If anyone is looking to get rid of the $3 a month plan let me know. I am interested in this for a secondary line.

I’ve seen that you can get a T-Mobile virtual SIM ICCID on eBay for about $5 and sign up for the $10 tablet plan. This apparently is a way to cheaply port out to T-Mobile and port back in to ATT.

    I didn’t try it however.
