Pandora buffering with 3mbps unlimited plan

3 of us have been running the 3 unlimited plan for over a year, with absolutely no problems.

I added my neighbor on as a 4th line, but she loves Pandora and it constantly buffers. My GF experienced the same thing a year ago and just moved to Spotify, and zero problems.

I use at least 6 streaming apps for music and podcasts, and no buffering issues ever.

I guess Pandora just uses a stupid high amount of bandwidth?

Anyway, I guess we're going to have to move her to the 8mb plan and hope that works. Sucks because we'll lose the 4 for 100 discount, just because of Pandora

Anyone have any experience with this?

The free version shouldn't be using much bandwidth since it uses a low quality bitrate. The paid version likely does use quite a bit with it's much better sounding higher bitrate.

On an iPhone XS Max and the unlimited Cricket plan I cannot get anything to play, or even log in to the site. Over wifi it works... very odd.

I have the paid version of Pandora and I burned 1Gb of data in less than one day using the application. The application was not running constantly but I was browsing the internet while streaming music. It is a data hog but it sounds fantastic.

Normally I only stream for about 15 minutes per day on my phone and usually run Pandora on my home computer when I am home, but I had to activate my hotspot when my WiFi went down temporarily.
Don't make me turn this car around.....

Good to know. Being used to I-Heart radio (free version), I was surprised how compressed free Pandora sounds. To me it just sounds awful. I-Heart is the best sounding free streaming service I have found.

No personal experiences here but I think raw uncompressed audio is likely far less than 3Mbps. I’d assume even high quality pandora would use compression and not need nearly that rate.

Have you tried speed tests to check latency and overall throughput?

    Weird...

    Thanks for the input everyone.

I suppose it makes sense if Pandora is higher quality on the paid version, but who really needs flac quality to stream music over their phone?

Also, I can stream a complete movie or sport event video on Playstation Vue without buffering. Weird.

Anyway, we'll switch her to 8mbps tonight. I'll report back how that goes over the next day or 2. Fingers crossed!

    **** Update - Fixed ****

Before I changed her plan to 8mbps, I decided to take a look at the advanced settings in her Pandora app and it turns out you can turn off high quality streaming.

100% fixed the streaming issue and she said it sounds great!

I figured you had tried that already... and on another note it's working fine for me today on the 3Mb plan.

I probably would have tried the stream downgrade option if I used Pandora myself, but yeah I feel a little dumb for not considering that out of the gate!
