Only some Android phones have Google Messages as factory installed, but you can add it along with Carrier Services.

What I meant to ask was: Is Google Messages the same app as the plain "Messages" app that is preloaded on most of the Android phones that I've ever owned (LG, ZTE, Moto, Huawei...). I think my TF-branded Samsung J3 Sky came with a different app for SMS, and I had to switch over and select "Messages" as the default SMS app.

The reason I ask is that I never explicitly downloaded "Google Messages" app, but the (sole) "Messages" app on my LG Q6 has a setting for Chat, but the "Messaging" app on my LG G6 does not have the setting for Chat.

If the icon looks like this, you're good:

You might have two Messages, but the old one has the old icon.

My LG Q6 has only one Messages app, and its icon looks like the picture you posted (with rounded corners). The app must have been updated when I last updated apps about 10 days ago.

My newer phones seem to have updated the Messages that was already there.

My Galaxy S5 now has two Messages. The old one and the new one that I apparently got from the Play Store (don't remember). The old one was apparently not able to be upgraded, so I had to start over. It also has the Carrier Services, but I think it got that by itself automatically as needed.

Samsung likes to include their own app (which has a different RCS implementation).

I this Moto has their own too (or maybe the AOSP all?).

hpham pretty sure you need data for RCS. It's not the legacy SMS system.

loboheeler I'm not fond of Google's app. Just passing updated info.
Back when they announced for England and France there was some confusion over US availability. Now if official, Google released to all US users.

Maybe when other apps can access the RCS system I'll use it but not going to use Google's app.

Samsung's app was supposed to be compatible, but I don't recall anyone getting it to work with another using Google Messages.

Verizon branded phones come with the Verizon Messages app, which had not been compatible with Google.

I have not seen RCS yet in the stock Samsung Messages on my J7 Crown S767VL yet. That app has not updated since I got the phone too.

Does that have the Samsung SMS app?

I don't know that the low end Samsung's include the app or the version with RCS.

I've not seen any thing suggesting Samsung's app was supposed to be compatible with Google's RCS implementation.

Everything I've seen says only Google's app works.

I'll wait for apps like Textra and Handcent to support it.

It does have the Samsung Messages app. I have to use Google Messages for RCS tho.

Samsung only RCS enabled certain of it's models like the Galaxy S8. Not sure if they use a special version of the app, or some other phone programming. It's not just the carriers that have been dragging their feet, but some manufacturers too.
