Sprint now roaming on ATT HSPA+ for voice calls

I guess Sprint is preparing for Verizon to degrade and turn down CDMA.
I just noticed that that my phone calls are going over AT&T HSPA(+) and I’m data roaming on AT&T LTE.

This is in-market roaming as well. Outside the building I get 1-2 bars of Sprint LTE, but inside I’m usually roaming on AT&T LTE for data and Verizon 1x for voice.

Now I am unable to get it to connect to Verizon 1x at all. It consistently and quickly hands over to AT&T LTE and down to HSPA on calls.

That is so neat. Hopefully it comes to our area.

I did notice two newly activated Sprint phones go straight Extended Roaming until I rebooted them. I wonder if that is because they were previously AT&T numbers.

I was able to replicate this with my Sonim XP8, however it does not use CSFB like the HTC 10 so it would connect to ATT LTE and Verizon 1x.

I was able to go into the phone info and select “LTE/UMTS (Auto PRL)” in an area with ‘ok’ Sprint coverage, and it connected right up and is using HSPA+ for voice calls..

Data also is working over HSPA+ while on a call!

Oh, and none of this usage is showing up as roaming.. I’ve been using quite a bit of data on AT&T for the past month and my roaming usage is 0MB...

What markets are folks seeing this AT&T roaming in? Would like to see if this is nationwide or just in certain markets.

I wonder how sprint can do roaming if AT&T shutsdown 3G.

AT&T won’t shut down 3g till 2022. So that will give time for sprint to figure out roaming with another provider or increaseing there coverage.

AT&T is already shutting down some of their 3G towers according to articles and fully shutdown by 2022. AT&T will not activate BYOD without VoLTE support next year and cricket early next year.

They aren't shutting down 3G towers. They have M2M contracts fulfill. Sprint will just have to get their act together and enable VoLTE on more devices.

If the merger goes through then it won't matter anyway.

I meant 3G panels, There are still 3G coverage nationwide but There might be some places that LTE only in the near future but I have no idea how AT&T will handle this because this can cause no 911 call if no 3G and no VoLTE.

Anyway to force roam on AT&T on a Sprint iPhone?
I am fairly certain no, but maybe if I put my phone in a lead box?

They aren’t going to turn down any 3G coverage prior to the official sunset.

New coverage might be LTE only, but existing won’t be affected.

It’s the same thing with Verizon and T-Mobile who are putting up LTE only sites.

The allowed roaming networks are determined by your carrier and if there is no current roaming agreement in a particular area you are out of luck. The carrier may be able to enable domestic roaming through their system on your behalf, but I don't think you can force it domestically by yourself. If there is no cellular coverage, your phone still can roam for 911 dialing no matter whose tower you connect to (assuming available frequencies on your device). If you have WiFi available and your phone/features are capable, then it doesn't matter either way.
Don't make me turn this car around.....
