I don't think you can do any better than Freedompop 1 year 1gb per month deal through Best Buy. At 49.99 or less per year, averages out to around $3 a month.

I think red pocket will still support it going forward. As it is service on my LTE Sims are still unchanged.

The guy above beat me to it!

why is the FREEDOMPOP site still offering FREE service - is that still a scam where they charge you after then send you a sim more than 14 days after so you can't get the free service?

Yeah, don't order online. Go buy a SIM at BestBuy or Target and get the free service set up. It's just very limited with only 200-250MB of data. RP hasn't changed the existing system so you get popups galore, especially on free plans, with the upsell spiels.

Unless you definitely need data, FreeUP is a safer deal in my opinion. There are just too many traps built-in in Freedompop's system to get your money. Also you need a smartphone with Freedompop whereas I can just use FreeUP SIM in a flip phone. FreeUP's current free deal is only 250 minutes/texts (combined and no data) but if you need more than that, it is fair to pay. I use FreeUP as a backup of a backup phone. My last three months' usage are 3 minutes, 12 minutes and 5 minutes.

Very satisfied with my FreeUp 500/500/100mb plan.

Too bad that plan is offered no more but the plan described just above is probably next best.

    Right.

    People who use this either:

    - Only need data
    - Put up with their VoIP
    - Use Hangouts for calls

Also be prepared that the service could be disrupted at any moment because Freedompop got bought out by Red Pocket. They'll probably continue it but who knows?

Both my grandfathered 1000min/txt no data plans have been working fine too.

As I have switched to this plan recently with a new SIM, I would imagine they will keep it if one's already on it. Otherwise they would have pulled those SIMs from the market months ago. If they discontinue current annual plans, then they will probably need to offer [prorated] refunds or offer comparable SIM/plans on the Red Pocket brand at no additional cost. Red Pocket does annual plans so this would be the more likely route if they do kill the FP annual SIMs.

When those plans expire, then it will be up to RP to decide if they will allow people to renew. I don't have a payment option set up on my new SIM, so I don't plan to keep it when the year is up.

The free plans are definitely on borrowed time. Those won't survive by this time next year, I bet.
