I hate it. I had someone back out of buying something from me because eBay imposed a tax on them which I had no control over

All its going to do is slow down the rate at which e-commerce was growing. Costs are being transferred to the seller in the form of decreased sales.

I don't buy from eBay unless there's some discount code happening anyway unless there's something I can't get anywhere else.

Whats going to happen is Eventually, seller will have to incorporate the sales tax into the price much like is already been done with free shipping. You as a buyer will just have to Dec decide whether the price is still worth it or not.

There was a US Supreme Court ruling in 2018 that changed how states can require collection of (mostly) sales tax even if the seller does not have a physical presence in a state.

"In a five-to-four decision issued today, the Supreme Court ruled that states can make online businesses collect sales taxes — even if they don’t have a physical presence in that state.

Today’s ruling overturns a decision from the Court in 1992 that paved the way for the explosion of online retail in the United States."

Since then nearly everything I have bought online has had taxes collected. I buy mostly from eBay and Amazon. I imagine the big online markets are going along with this because they don't want to get sued by states.

My state, Virginia, requires us to disclose purchases made without sales tax and pay the 5.3% with our income tax return. I suspect that this was widely ignored.

I doubt that this change is going to kill or significantly diminish online market sales. It is pretty well established at this point. Sounds like a real nuisance for small sellers though.

The old saying, "there are no guarantees except death and taxes" comes to mind with this thread.

If you can score a VZ refill card without sales tax and load it into My Verizon for a prepaid line it will pull from the funded balance without adding taxes. It’s the last place like this that I know of and that first step is getting harder. The line I support is funded for another three months on discounted refills.

If you don't need a new SIM then buy the refill listing and use a fake address in a no tax state

And be ready to be charged with tax evasion and mail fraud (federal offense).

Worse yet is even if the seller refunds the buyer fully, seller still looses out. Paypal keeps the full fee. Imagine having a buyer back out of a $1000 sale. Paypal keeps $30.

Yep..if this keeps up, I predict the internet itself will be gone in two or three years tops! I can't wait for Kmart to bounce back...

Don't forget about Toys r Us, Circuit City, Montgomery Wards, and Sears. They will be happy to come back when the internet goes bust.
