My setup for when I'm in the Caribbean and Mexico:
Puerto Rico (and possibly usvi): FreedomPop gsm Sim

Everywhere else: keepGo international Sim. $50 for Sim and 1 gig data. 1 gig data refill is$26 (doesn't expire).

Note: doesn't work in Bahamas or st Maarten

https://www.keepgo.com/pages/faq says "What is the validity period of my data? Your data will be valid for 1 year from the moment of your last data refill. Any additional refill will extend the validity period of your data to one year."

    Is that accurate?

Yes, will likely be closer to full speed data, but will be costlier. If you really need some full speed data, T-mobile offers $5/day full speed data instead of the free throttled data. But you will need the login info for the account to purchase them.

Apple and Google Maps work okay on the throttled data as do most apps. Just no streaming and no high bandwidth websites. Also with the hotspot data, you can both be connected simultaneously, and my guess is the hotspot isn’t unlocked, so you can use the other SIM in it.

I just got back from a cruise on the Norwegian Sky. If you're considering getting the on-ship Wifi. It will be extremely slow. Royal Caribbean had fast wifi when I used theirs three years ago.

We did an Alaskan cruise back in August. The wifi on that was slow, too, so I am not surprised.
