I got that text yesterday. But hotspot has always worked on my Android phone on TW. Now it started working on the iPhones on our plan.

All Tracfone Companies have covered hotspot in T&C. Not always current.

Their TOS still prohibit data-only Mi-Fi devices. They say that if they catch you using one that they will discontinue your service. I doubt if TW really cares how you use your 10GB, but Verizon may care.

Typically, the hotspot function is disabled/not visible on a TracFone/Total Wireless branded phone.

Its not visible on a S5, S7 or Galaxy Luna Pro.

Does TracFone/TW have to send an update to the phone or correct some setting on their end to make this function active/visble????????

Technically it was not allowed even if it worked.

Now they explicitly allow up to 10GB/line on most plans.

Yes, though it may not enable it on all devices.

You can contact them, there's an SMS option, or just wait til your plan restarts.

Some reports of data slowdowns on iPhones after enabling early (and at least one report that starting a new plan period fixed that).

I don't need it so I'm not pushing for any changes.

SMS is useless. It just tells you to "check in your phone options". It does not verify compatibility, period.
TracFone is blaming Samsung for disabling the hotspot function in such phones as the Galaxy s5 and s7. Although those are older phones, they most likely had the hotspotting function visible.

I have an old S4 from Verizon that has the hotspotting function visible, so I know a s5 and a s7 should have it. Branded phone = disabled functions.

I bought a Samsung phone from TW. Hotspot always worked. And it was unlocked so I was able to use it with prepaid SIM cards outside the U.S..

I said it depended on compatibility and might not work.

I said the feature could be enabled via SMS.
Whether it functions or not is a separate issue.

The software features on a given phone is determined by the OEM. And a company like TF could have speced software mods, just as AT&T, TMO, and VZW do. I know several TF phones have custom firmware vs other carrier or "unlocked" versions.

And it's unlikely any device sold with such customization (like disabling hotspot) would get a firmware update to change it, especially older devices like you mentioned.

I'm in a similar boat with VoLTE in a few devices. Old firmware that ties to a Verizon account to enable VoLTE, Verizon is not going to update them to all VoLTE on MVNOs. So while they are VoLTE capable on Verizon they won't get it on MVNOs.
