    Unlocked phone on blacklist?

Can an unlocked phone from a prepaid service provider be put on the blacklist for non payment? I was told in another thread that all their phones come unlocked and if I decide to cancel after 1 month I can keep the phone. I got a free unlocked iPhone from them. After porting a number to them and finally getting my online account registered I find an unsettling message under my device:
23 months remaining on your 24 month agreement. If you cancel today you would owe $382.37.

Before I divulge the provider I would like opinions on the matter. Thanks for reading.

Yup because you don't own the phone. You only possess it.

I’m confused. “If you cancel today you owe”. That’s not prepaid. Prepaid if you buy the device it’s locked for 6 months to a year of usage on that service.

But you don’t owe any money on cancellation for the phone it just stays locked.

These are factory unlocked iPhones. I never signed a contract or agreed to make payments either. I was told I was getting a free phone and there was never a mention of paying for it ever. All I had to do was pay for one month of service. If I continue that was up to me.

You have to pay for that plan. You financed that phone. If you don’t it’ll hurt your credit

During the signup process, did you see a statement similar to this?

"By selecting the Instant Phone Discount you are agreeing to keep your mobile service active with Pure Talk for 24 months. Of course, you can leave anytime, we just ask that you repay the prorated discount amount.

This is not a Credit Check - A credit check is not required to receive your Instant Phone Rebate. You will have a chance to review the complete terms of the Instant Phone Discount below. "

also if the phone is not fully paid for, they can blacklist the phone and can also turn you in to a collection agency.

No it was not that. I got an email from AMAC and followed that link in the email. It absolutely did not say that. And it didn't mention that in the sign up process either.

My emails detailing the order do not say anything like this. My phone was free. I know that sounds absurd but it is what it is.

Almost always, you don’t see the details and terms directly on the sign up or final order pages. All you’re going to see are LINKS. Did you click on the links to read the details/terms?

That’s how I do it when I sign up for anything (e.g., internet, phone). I make sure I click on each link provided during the sign up so I know what the details and terms are. I save a screenshot of everything.
