Wierd Agony With S8 and a Data Hoarder

An old friend bought an S20 last year and eventually gave/loaned/? me his existing S8. He set it up with a new sim and everything worked fine. He still had all his old junk on it, but was in a hurry to get this done (plus he hoards junk data and can't bear to part with it -- yes, it is insane*).

So, after about a month, I start getting absolutely hammered day and night (like from 2 to 4 AM!) with hysterical notifications from Samsung to log in to "my account" which has been sitting idle for almost two years. I can't find a way to make that awful noise stop anywhere on any menu.

It gets worse. He gives me his password and I try to log in, but I can't go through the rigmarole with a different phone number, etc., etc., so "this account is suspended." Fine, I couldn't care less about that...but it keeps noisily hassling me to log in, even on this inaccessible "suspended" account! Day and night, apparently forever amen.

So, the phone is shut down until I get a solution.

Can I disable anything in the menus to make this nonsense just go away even without resolution?

The other treat is that though I can receive texts is fine, my ability to send texts mysteriously stops until some fairly routine reset function is performed, though I don't remember what it is.

    Many thanks for any solutions!

*This guy really has a bizarre quirk. When I first met him twenty-two years ago, he had two feet of junk mail stashed in his hall closet. With the advent of the Internet, he began hoarding everything that came his way, every spam message for Viagra, every ephemeral email or text, everything. Nothing deleted ever. He had all this stored on other servers at considerable expense until cheap storage and The Cloud arrived. I think he gave me this phone because it was almost full and he couldn't bear the thought of cleaning it up, though it's presumably on Samsung's cloud.

Do a factory reset without backup on the phone and start over fresh. Doing a factory reset will not wipe your phone service setup.

You can try to stop the offending notification by going in Settings -> Apps -> All Apps. Find the Samsung ones in the list. On my S4 some can have their notifications turned off. Some can be disabled. There are about 20 Samsung apps on my S4. I have no idea which one does what. I have never used them. The icon in the notification might indicate which app it is coming from.

Two feet of junk mail in the closet. That is nothing compared to what I had to clean out of a hoarder relative's house. The entire attic was full along with parts of several rooms - correspondence, old magazines, account statements and tax returns going back to the 1940s. That was just the papers. There were hoards of a bunch of other stuff too filling the house and garage. The account statements were the big problem - about 60 bags of them. Up until about 1970 the Social Security number was printed in full on most of them. I had to go through them page by page back home to check if anything should be kept and what to shred. I burned out my shredder and had to resort to burning papers in the hull of an old gas grill. To add to the chore, flat papers don't burn. Each sheet had to be crumpled, one sheet at a time, to get them to burn. Overall we spent three days a month for seven months to clear the place out. Still, there are worse hoarders. There was no junk in the yard and there was no animal hoarding.

I seem to remember that having a Samsung Account was optional on Samsung phones. Would think you could remove one in Settings > Accounts.

I checked my S3 and S4. Samsung account is not in Settings > Accounts.

I'm pretty sure I set it up on the S3, but not the S4. The S3 nags something about it occasionally. I don't use either phone regularly anymore.

A factory data reset without backup should take care of it, which I would do with a junked up phone anyway. IIRC, you can skip setting up a Samsung account during initial setup after a reset.

Of course, I only have the S3 and S4. I have no idea if all the same applies to an S8.

Anchoret, your style of writing gave me a good , deep belly laugh ! Thank you.

Now........this phone from the dark swamp is not a laughing matter.........I would be very perturbed if awakened by it at night ( I turn my phone

off most nights ). As bobdevnul says, your only decent option is a factory reset......unless.....you want to run through each App and Setting

to customize and delete all the crap on the phone —— and that may not fix it. I would think you could sign out of Samsung , but will that

do the trick ? Probably not. Give an update when you can. Thanks for the humor ( I know your friends problem is not funny at all ).

I cannot find the actual Samsung account listed among the apps, just numerous other Samsung apps.

I temporarily silenced the notifications sound effect, but now of course I have no announcement of texts, either.

I just caught myself before deleting the account (if it would allow me too!) because it looks like it would detach him from any of his stuff on the Samsung cloud, which might be a problem for him. Remember, this is still attached -- incorrectly, of course -- with his account.

A factory reset (as onerous as a fresh reconfiguration of options and settings probably is) sounds like a better option, but I had better check with him first. This could be a major nosebleed, but if it could be done without affecting his access to his "important" hoarded stuff, especially as he neurotically never lets go of any data (and has anyone ever heard of this strange monomania before?).

It will be a few days before I can go through this him.
