Migrating from 3G Only to 4G Phone-Pay as You go Question

I had a legacy landline # that I wanted to preserve, so I ported it to PagePlus and enabled call forwarding so that anytime someone calls that # it is automatically forwarded to Google Voice/my cell phone.

I am currently on the PAY AS YOU GO $80 annual plan for minutes/texting only. Since I don't actually utilize the phone # and device on a regular basis I have been putting off migrating to a 4G LTE device.

However, I have heard from different sources that 3G will be permanently shutdown at the end of 2020. The Pay as You Go 3G plan is $80 annual for $0.04 per minute, while the 4G $80 annual plan is $0.06. I am currently paid up till 1/1/2021.

If I migrate to a 4G phone now, will I automatically be put on the 4G $0.06 per minute plan now? Does anyone see any downside till waiting till the end of 2020 before switching over, or waiting until PagePlus forces me to switch?

    Yes.

    With your described usage, no.

Have you considered simply porting the # from PPC to GV before 12/31/20? That would be a 1-time $20 fee vs $80/year to keep the legacy landline # alive.

Thanks for replies. In regards to porting the # to Google Voice, I am a heavy GV user and would like nothing better than to port it over. However, there are certain numbers that Google Voice registers as ineligible and mine is one of them. I've checked for a few years.

Page Plus prepaid was a decent option at the time, circa 2011, because it was one prepaid carrier that supported call forwarding, which not every prepaid plan did.

I have a legacy PAYGO "Standard" plan as well on a 3G smartphone. It stopped showing "3G" some time ago, not sure exactly when, as I don't use it often. So now only it gets "1x" at home at least. For now I'm not in a hurry to upgrade this line to an LTE device.

I also have a really old Nokia 3585i, still active on the same plan that I use as an emergency/glovebox phone. I may need to upgrade this one soon

Keep in mind that upgrades in Verizon service need to be to a VoLTE capable phone, and not just a 4G LTE phone. Many older phones do not support VoLTE.
