Can i use sim that is in contract on a ipad

I have a iPhone 8 that is under contract until Oct. No one is using the phone currently, I got it for my grandson and he got his own plan. My question is can I use the sim card in my iPad air 2/ I tried it and it works but will it continue to work for LTE service?

Most wireless carriers (T-Mobile, at&t and Verizon) can swap SIM card to different device.
    Some may limit service.
When you swapped the SIM , it worked for awhile, it should work forever
