Can a rational choice be made for choosing an app store other than Google Play Store? Aim is to not have to rely on connecting myself too heavily to Google in order to find and use applications for Android o.s. I am aware of such "stores" as Aptoide, F-Droid, Aurora, Amazon-Appstore, and I am sure there are others. Just how does a person make a choice of which of them to try and use? One thing I notice, is that any time I become aware of any app of interest, it is always reported as available through Google Play Store.

The choice is not a rational one but an educated one. One can't avoid Google without in depth education & persistence. After all Google is baked into Android. The easiest way & it may appear not to be the easiest way is to root your phone, install a custom ROM & not install Gapps. GIYF & XDA Developers.

Hey @zapjb thanks for trying - one of the things I am not yet sure about is if when I hook a google account to the smartphone the device will always be stuck with it, so I do not want to use any Google account with the smartphone, I do not want to need to sign in to a Google account, and so I am hoping to try some alternative app store system other than Google Play store.Originally Posted by zapjb

Same thing GIYF. Google is baked into Android. If your not using a custom ROM Google still owns you.

A google account is not required to use android.
You can sideload apps with no google account.
There might be some apps that require a google account but you don't have to use those apps.
One app that requires a google account is the google Play Store. Google did not have to require an account to use the Play Store if they didn't want to but they want to try and get people to use the account so they can track you.
Microsoft is similar, where they try and get you to use a Microsoft account with the OS even though you don't have to. I do not use a Microsoft account on Windows 10.

Something I found is that without any Google Account and without any Google Account registered onto the smartphone, the Playstore still can be opened to show applications having available Updates, and these can be downloaded and installed to become updated; and they are of course, the apps which are already installed on the device as the device was received purchased. This way, the Playstore app will always tell me what apps are ready to be updated, as long as they are already on the smartphone upon purchase. The practical apps which seem most useful and convenient and are currently on the device are Maps, G-Chrome, Google News, YouTube(but this will consume too much battery and any cellular data), and certainly the Google dialer and the Google "Messages"(for send and receive text messages). Also a "Files" app is a Google product.
Some apps outside of Google which I would like to try, generally and not any specific named app product, are a browser(web browser) and email client; but not sure about a weather app.

This in a heartbeat, however a device is also not “locked” to the first google account that signs into it either, which is one of the ops concerns.
Just like with Apple, there is way to remove a google account from a device, usually under the Accounts page in the settings.
Google is easier since iOS requires that you turn off “Find My” “iMessage” and “FaceTime” on your device before doing a full wipe to factory defaults.
iOS is more likely to lock a device to a single account than android. (Android also allows multiple accounts on the same device, as is setup on my tablet at home.)
If you don’t turn off all three on iOS before you switch devices, you could end up not able to receive text messages or phone calls - especially if you switch to android.

That is very helpful insight. Also guides me away very well from getting any iPhone.
I had seen some of that "remove google account,... " related in the online webpage of the account, where, as I had a few years ago, a device shown to be linked to a google account.
So it seems by what you say, I may put TWO or more Google accounts on the same device and may choose for which I would want to use for play.google.com for getting applications for Android. I might want to create a fresh Google account JUST FOR the new smartphone.
Another thing I found which helped me want to step away from using Google for smartphone and apps, is that the playstore account does not let you clean-up or edit or delete information in the playstore account. This account holds EVERYTHING you have done with Google Play and makes for too, too much cluttering information. Google just collects way too much information -- way way way way too much information.
Yet one more reason for wanting to step away from reliance on Google Play Store for apps is that the new device is intended partly for another person who is far less familiar with cellphones, smartphones, "apps", Windows, cellular & internet services than I am.

If you want to get away from Google in an Android context. The methods discussed by others won't make a dent in the information Google has on you.

get a new gmail account that you only use on that phone ,
Do not use that email address on your home computer ,
Just isolate everything to the "Ghost phone"
This will last as long as you do not forget and email - call - log in to stuff from your prior Google life.....
PS......its not going to be easy , and you cannot tell us since you will need to quit Howard Forums too !

Yeah those first parts seem to make sense; and most important is remember and stay with those guidelines.
