I thought T-Mobile had shut some of this down quite a while ago? Here in Iowa the map still shows 2G service, because IWireless was -- believe it or not -- still running extensive 2G-only coverage at the end of 2018 when T-Mo bought them out, and these areas basically didn't get 4G until end of 2019 or so, but I assumed this was an anomaly and 2G was gone in general.

I think you'll find that 2G is still there on most sites. It uses such little spectrum, that it was probably just an after thought to flip a switch and turn it on. Now the exception to that could be the low-band only sites that were deployed to add coverage in less populated areas on Band 12 or Band 71. I don't think they have it.

The last time I forced my phone onto 2G, you could hardly get any data at all through EDGE, but one could still make voice calls.

According to this source, the 3G shutdown has already been delayed until April 2022:

Yeah, it's VERY low, for GSM the channel is like 200khz (0.2mhz) (8 timeslots, 2 used for control channels, so 6 calls or 12 half-rate calls; or some combination of calls and data.) As far as I know GSM was only ever deployed in US on 850 and 1900 (band 2 and 5), at least some of the band 12/71 sites are in areas where T-Mo has no band 2 so they couldn't deploy 2G even if they wanted to.

    Or going into retirement.
iPhone 12 Pro is my current primary phone. No plans to upgrade plan to 5G.
