OEM Unlocked Moto E6 - no hotspot

Using a brand new OEM unlocked version of the E6 running Android 9, on the AT&T network through Red Pocket.

When attempting to enable wifi hotspot, I get the dreaded "Account not set up for mobile hotspot" with a URL to visit on the AT&T website. I did make sure that "dun" was included in the APN settings.

This is 100% an OEM phone, and not a carrier-branded phone, so I was surprised to find out the built-in hotspot does not work.

Why would an OEM device perform a provisioning check? Is this something new in more recent versions of Android, or am I missing something?

Did you check your current account features/settings ? It is possible that the feature was not auto-added or that a feature is not setup correctly on the phone. Likely you will need to contact customer service or visit a local store to check provisioning. I hope that helps.
    Just another day in paradise.....

Yep, you need to contact Red Pocket via chat and make sure the feature is turned on.

I remember reading that Google did add this provisioning check to Android at some point, at the request of carriers, but can't recall which version was the first to have it. Root access would allow you to bypass it in various ways.

Hotspot works fine on Red Pocket Verizon with a 2020 Moto G Stylus.

I was previously using an OEM Moto E4, and have been using hotspot with no issues for years on Red Pocket, never had to enable an account feature. Perhaps there is some additional checks happening in newer versions of Android, even for OEM phones. I will reach out to Red Pocket and have them check my account.

Well I'll be damned. Contacted Red Pocket, the rep said hang on while I enable hotspot, got updated APN settings (appear the same as before), and sure enough, it's working now. Not really sure how the phone is able to do a provisioning check without knowing who the carrier is, but I guess it is.

    Thanks for the advice!

Good to hear!! Been mostly pleased with Red Pocket chat when I needed them. Still much better than dealing with FreedomPop. . . . .
