    Unhappy GV activation

    Hello

gv was not activated (free gv number) by my AT&T number.

I read that it happens when earlier someone else already activated gv.

After buying truphone sim I understood that it does not receive verification sms

then I tried hushed.com 3 day free number it also did not activate gv

is there any cheap method to activate gv ? (or free )

    thank you

You could buy a https://www.h2owireless.com/plan/minute 90 day paygo plan for $10, use it to claim a GV #, then simply remove the # from your GV account, and the let it expire.

https://tello.com has plans from $5, but I'm not sure if there's a charge for the SIM or shipping.

There may be others available for under $10...

Get a Textnow number. TN will reject the text that GV sends, but just check the GV notice to use voice call instead. Goes right through. (for now)
TN is free also, just shows ads.

gv adds textnow number to its list, but don't give gv number

if I try again gv rejects operation (also gv number which I chose in first cycle is gone - you cant choose it again)

GV requires a real mobile cell service number to activate. They won't take landline or VOIP numbers. Truphone is some kind of hybrid that uses real cell service, but does not qualify as real cell service.

my experience for the last few years is that only a real carrier cell number works for initial activation. any US number at all work for adding forwarding phones after activation. in some cases the number that do not work for initial activation may still get the verification text if you add them to an already activated account, otherwise you can use the phone call verification method.

OP could ask any friend with a US cell number but without a GV account to receive the activation text for them and than immiediatly remove the number so it does not remain linked in any way to the friends phone.

That might actually (probably will) work, assuming the phone # hasn't by some wild coincidence already been used to claim a GV #.

Mint Mobile provides a real cellular phone #.

I'll try to keep that Mint Mobile option in mind for future recommendations...

Shouldn't "free" trial actually be free? It seems you use the app to either activate eSIM or order a physical SIM.

Last week. The GV window that does the verification call doesn't show the voice option at first try sometimes.
Textnow wants $3 a year to be able to use their numbers for verification texts. How do they know a verification text, are they reading incoming texts? Privacy problem?

That TextNow thing is very confusing. Others have said it does nothing more than make it so the phone # doesn't get recycled. But if that's true, then what is the TextNow "Lock In Number" service for $4.99/year?

Anyway, just to clarify, what you're describing was for CLAIMING a NEW GV #, vs adding the TextNow # as a forwarding # to an EXISTING GV #?

    Thanks!

    I tried by voice option
    result you can read above

Textnow wants $3 a year to be able to use their numbers for verification texts.
    I can't see such option
textnow suggests me to buy "Lock In Number"

    which costs for me 5.63$/year

Yeah, I'm not sure where that $3/year price came from, even though I thought that price it sounded familiar to me. Perhaps it was that, and then TextNow raised it to $4.99/year (+ applicable taxes). Or perhaps I'm misremembering, and it has always been $4.99/year.

Anyway, I don't believe paying TextNow for "Lock In Number" will add any functionality for receiving 2FA texts, since the phone # will still be VoIP. If I'm wrong, hopefully someone has some additional evidence of what "Lock In Number" will actually do.
