Horrible Verizon coverage in Deep Creek MD

So I was in Deep Creek MD over the weekend and native coverage was horrible. According to Verizonís map the whole lake was native coverage but maybe only the top 1/3 at the most was native, the rest was LTE roaming. I was surprised with the lake and attached ski resort being a huge tourist area.

Iím 99% sure I was roaming on AT&T and coverage was excellent. But the hard 0.1 Mbps speed cap was very hard to make maps and stuff load. I get the cap because they donít want to pay AT&T a ton in data roaming fees but you would think they could at least provide 0.5 or 1 Mbps speed to let maps and things work much better.

It seems like from deep creek south to WV doesnít have much Verizon coverage at all. In the WV-MD areas Verizon got between 160 and 200 MHz of C-Band so I wonder if they will finally spend the money to invest in that area.

Don't forget that due to licensing agreements that Verizon may not be able to fully deploy towers in that area and relies on roaming networks instead. I can't say with any certainty, just offering a possible explanation.

Verizon has always been terrible in Deep Creek. I believe Verizon roams on US Cellular there.

From looking at coverage maps the Verizon roaming in that area looks identical to AT&Tís coverage so thatís why I assumed it was AT&T that I was roaming in. There are plenty of towers in the area, just Verizon isnít on any of them but one that is in McHenry that I could see.

Either way whichever carrier it roams on they do have excellent coverage.

Yeah. I know it can be a variety of reasons. Their are plenty of towers in the area, just Verizon isnít on them.

And if a carrier doesnít want to fully deploy in an area do to things like cost and ROI I can fully understand that. I just think it would be a plus to provide fast enough service through roaming so I can send picture messages and do navigation and things like that. I understand setting the cap low enough to not be able to stream music and video well to save data costs but IMO 0.1 Mbps is a bit excessive. Maybe just bump that up to at least .5 or .6 to keep it inline with the hotspot cutoff cap speed.

West Virginia is known to have poor Verizon service. Deep Creek is West Virginia with a Maryland address (and taxes). ;~>

Yeah. AT&T definitely has the best coverage in WV. I traveled in WV a lot for my old job and AT&T always had good service.

Yeah. Well maybe with all the spectrum they just bought they may finally plan to do something about it but who knows.

I think the end game for that area is to eventually buy out US Cellular.

Roaming might have been US Cellular in the past, though CDMA-less devices can't obviously attach to USCC's CDMA network and I don't think Verizon has a VoLTE agreement with USCC like T-Mobile does.

CDMA-less devices do, however, roam on AT&T in areas. So you might be correct.

Iíve heard from locals who claim the former Shentel network was the premier local wireless network of West Virginia.

    Seems like ATT is too.

ďThe Internet wasnít meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so itís insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead ó itís a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.Ē John Legere 1/5/2017

Yeah. I have the iPhone 12pro which has CDMA-less provisioning.
