Using Locked Tmobile Phone on Boost

Now that Boost is transitioning everyone to the Tmobile network can Boost customers use locked Tmobile phones on Boost? Can Boost customers use locked Metropcs phones on Boost?

    Thanks

no and no. Boost does use the t-mobile network but they have their own SIM cards that are not recognized as t-mobile ones

Not fully true. Locked TMobile phones yes, metro no. You can use a locked TMobile phone on any TMobile based provider.

my personal experience is that yes nearly all T-Mobile MVNO's with Boost being an exception

have you actually been successful in using a T-Mobile locked phone on Boost ?

to check i just placed a Boost SIM in a T-Mobile locked iPhone X and the phone immiediatly went to the 'carrier not supported' message. The boost SIM also starts with different numbers than typical T-Mobile and T-Mobile MVNO SIM cards.

my understanding is Boost is using SIM's for the under construction DISH network that are currently roaming on T-Mobile but could also roam on other networks.

another thing to keep in mind is that in addition to being unlocked is that boost does pair the SIM and IMEI and the IMEI must be in Boosts 'whitelist' of known compatible devices. Many phones that would work fine on T-Mobile, Metro or T-Mobile MVNO's will not work on Boost since they are not in their database of tested compatible phones.

many older phones in particular are not accepted as well as the lesser known brands of unlocked handsets like BLU and Umidigi. Most unlocked intended for US market Samsungs and Motorola are whitelisted.

another thing to keep in mind is that it seems Boost has visibility into T-Mobile and Sprint database of 'officially unlocked' phones and verifies before allowing use. this means some phones may work if officially unlocked through the original carrier but not if they were unlocked via a hack or software unlocking method such as common at repair shops or eBay unlocking services. while the hack unlocked device is capable of working fine Boost will not allow the activation since the database says it is still locked.

it is not entirely clear why they are being so restrictive but it could be they want to limit phone used to ones that will transition neatly to the new network under construction by DISH.
