Rectangular plate on the back of the Pixel XL - what is it for?

My wife is emptying a house for a couple and the guy there gave her his Pixel XL which he is no longer using. I noticed a black, rectangular plate on the back of the phone. I looked at some images of the Pixel and I don't see this plate. Is it something he did himself? It obviously isn't supposed to be removed because that little circle is a rivet, not a screw.

I'll give up my iPhone SE 2016 when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers. (And in fact the original iPhone SE is much smaller so my cold, dead fingers will be much harder to pry from it than with a larger phone.)

Just watched a video online when a user was unboxing the phone for the first time. That "plate" that your image shows does not look like a factory installed item. If I had to guess, some repair was made to the phone and it wasn't done by the manufacturer. Other than that, I have no idea why it is on that phone. Does the phone work?

Probably a magnetic plate to hold it in a charger, or in a car mount.

Interesting. Yes, that's most likely what it is. To answer Serial Port's question, yes, the phone works. I charged it, installed and uninstalled my Google account and everything works. I didn't insert a SIM card or make any calls however.
