TF Moto G7 Optimo Maxx needs a restart to turn on LTE

TF Moto G7 Optimo Maxx needs a restart to turn on LTE if data has been turned off for a while.
Sometimes toggling to airplane mode and back gets it going. Usually not.
The Data icon will have 3G or sometimes 1x but doesn't ever work at all like that even slowly.
Once LTE is working it works really well with great speed.
Other than that the phone works really well. I don't use data that much and the only time it is a real hassle is if I need a connection on Android Auto while driving.

Maybe the signal is weak or the APN needs adjusting.

    Try Network Signal Info https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...android.telnet

Run the app with and without data working. Also with and without a call in progress (can affect data).

Which Tracfone sim is in the phone?

I have found other users with this issue, but I have not figure out what is going on yet.

They have great LTE signal when it is connected to LTE.

The phone is a few years old and Verizon ownership has changed some things.

So perhaps a newer sim could improve the performance, including WiFi calling.

What's the best way to get a new sim and does it need/should to be registered with Tracfone? The phone is unlocked. Is it possible the phone is not compatible with WiFi calling even with the proper Wifi calling sim? There is currently no switch to enable WiFi where it would normally show up.

You can use the Moto phone's service menu to see if it is WiFi-Calling capable. Bring up the phone app and use the dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* there is no need to press call button. It should bring up a menu. Choose phone info and scroll down until you see a number of toggle switches. If WiFi-Calling is there, the phone is capable. If the toggle is off and greyed out, the phone is not provisioned. If it is not greyed out, you can try turning it on but it probably won't stay on.

You don't say which carrier you are using. If it is Verizon and it is an old account, there are known issues with WiFi-Calling. TF support may be able to turn WiFi-Calling off/on and fix it. That has worked for some. I got it working on a Moto G Power but had to activate with new phone number.

Yes, WiFi calling is greyed out and off. Carrier is Verizon (Is specified in my upper right info box).
    Thanks.

Seems this phone is also known as the Motorola Moto G7 Power (XT1955DL)
    https://support.tracfone.com/deviceh...power-xt1955dl

There is a tutorial there that describes how to turn on Wi-Fi calling:
    https://support.tracfone.com/tutoria...power-xt1955dl

The e911 site mentioned in the tutorial (I believe there is a new url as well) is not alway accurate with the info it returns in my experience as I have a few devices that have Wi-Fi calling active and the site states they are not eligible. Others are eligible. So that site may not always be helpful or consistent.

You could call the Tracfone corporate office number (the number is posted below) and ask the rep to enable Wi-Fi calling on the line and see what they say. It's not an easy thing to get done. Not all reps are equally competent. Not everyone has been able to do it. Just a heads up.

As a background, it seems there are 3 states a TF/V phone can be in with regards to Wi-Fi calling.

State #1 is like yours, you can't even access the WF calling toggle to turn it on or add the e911 address. No Wi-Fi calling functionality at all.

In State #2, you can toggle the switch on and add the emegency address, but, Wi-fi calling still doesn't actually work since it won't come on with the force test (Airplane mode on, Wifi on) and it won't come on automatically if it is actually needed when network signal is poor. It seems many phones are in this state, probably as a result of TF/Verizon enabling the function on our older lines recently (new lines have working wf calling immediately) and it's just not provisioned properly

State #3 is working Wifi calling. You can toggle it on, add the address, and Wi-Fi calling works with force test and when phone decides it is needed. Recent new lines seem to automatically get working Wifi Calling. Older lines seem to get state #2.

I've heard of people who tried to fix this issue while in state #2 get pushed back to state #1.

I've gotten Wi-Fi callig on a few iphones fixed by calling the corporate office. My iPhones were in state #2 when I got them fixed (after having been in state #1 in the past). The rep fixed it by disabling and then enabling Wi-Fi calling on the line via the account tools. Only the corporate office reps can do this.

I don't know if this will be the fix for your phone since your phone is in state #1 and it is an Android phone.

I don't know if the phone may actually need a new sim...perhaps the rep can help with that if that is the case (I don't think so but I'm not sure).

I've only heard of one Android phone definitively getting WF calling fixed with TF corp office help best case scenario. It was a Moto and it was initially in state #2, devolved with support "help" to State #1, recovered to state #2 and was fixed to state #3 after some more TF corp office calls.

    That thread is here: https://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ng-on-Tracfone

Regarding the LTE issue, check the APN on the phone. It should be VZWINTERNET. If it is anything else, change it to this, and save it.

If the APN is good, you can turn off phone, take sim out, put back in and turn back on. Or do the same but turn phone back on without sim.
Then turn off, put back sim, turn on.

I had an issue with LTE not working yesterday after a transfer but it did not seem to be the apn (hard to know cause it was iPhone) based on the signal it was showing or not showing to be more exact and I did a quick version of this which is to eject sim while phone is on and then push back in. This fixed it instantly. This is usually not recommended cause you can damage the sim and phone so I don't recommend doing that, just what i did.

If phone is unlocked, you can turn off phone and take out TF sim and put in a completly different provider sim (non tracfone or any of its sisters) if you have, turn on and then let it sit a bit, then turn off, remove and put back TF sim. This has fixed odd and fix-resistant lte/volte issues on one of my iphones in the past.

If you do that, after putting back TF sim, check the APN to make sure it is still correct.

You can also try to reset network settings. You'll need to reenter wifi info.

Also the TF corp office may be able to help with LTE issues along with Wi-Fi calling.

The TF corp office number is 305 640-2000 x1029

    Also 800 626-4883 x 3324

Ignore the hours available message. They are open everyday 8am-11:45 pm est. just enter extension number when prompted.

Thanks for the info. I have done all but play with sim cards so far. When I have time to mess around I will do that.
Tracfone customer support has been all over the map. WiFi calling the easy answer is always the phone is not compatible.
With needing to restart the phone to use LTE, per Tracfone not a concern since that fixes it (only until the next time). And that maybe a new Sim might help. I would have to buy (Tracfone not supplying) I do already have one at home I will need to try.
This is how the phone has always been and other than these (2) things runs really well, no lagging etc.

Yeah intitially when I was trying to get Wi-Fi calling fixed on my iPhones I was told a lot of different things by various reps including that my phones were not compatible or eligible (the site showed this too), that the sim was not WiFi calling capable, that TF/Verizon doesn't offer Wi-Fi calling, that iPhones are not capable and I have to contact Apple or buy an Android phone, all kinds of stories. Not saying that this is all definitely not the case with this particular phone and sim, but I've heard it all and my phones (some quite old) all now have working WF calling and nothing has changed other than it was finally properly provisioned. That said, maybe a new sim could help I don't know.

It can be hard to get accurate info. I'd stick with the corp lines in any case since the chat/lower level support are generally not capable of fixing this problem and they tend to be less knowlegeable. I had to call many times to finally got it working. Anyway, good luck.

Maybe I missed it but haven't seen anyone chime in that as the Optimo Maxx with wifi calling working but I read somewhere that Verizon is phasing in wifi calling model by model. Maybe even down to the imei level. That could be it for now.
As far as dropping to 1x/3g I occasionally get the same. I live in a fringe area that still likely has 3G active. I assume it's because if LTE is weak or congested and since a phone is always searching for the best signal it's dropping to 1x/3g. What usually works for me is just putting it in airplane mode for a bit or restarting. Then it locks back onto an LTE signal.

Same, except toggling airplane mode only works rarely anymore. Restart always works. I rarely use data with secure WiFi almost anywhere I am at. I use data mostly to update traffic in Google maps while in Android Auto. This phone works real well in Android Auto. And I use that offline mostly with downloaded maps.

Yes I saw that's what you do too. Are you also in a fringe area like I mentioned and maybe that's why it drops to 1x/3G?

Curious if someone that has a Optimo Maxx that has wifi calling working mentions it or if it's the possible reason I mentioned.
I have a Moto E6. Wifi calling worked fine on T-Mobile but not on Verizon.

Update. Phone is now working correctly regarding LTE being available when toggled on from being turned off. Bought a new SIM card. Initially had extremely slow download speeds and 0 upload speed. Had a requested call back from a low level associate that could not help. Call back the TF corp office number and settings were re-configured at both ends and all works as intended.
Also followed up at the TF corp office number regarding Wifi calling after numerous checks my phone is not compatible even with a new SIM.
Thanks for everyone's help on this.
