Is it normal to be given a phone number from out of state when activating a line?

I just activated a new phone this evening on the Tracfone site. It asked for my zipcode in one of the steps. I find out hours later upon activation that the area code is from another state. Phone seems to work fine, so I don't know. I've activated many TF over the years, but they've always given me a number in my area code.

Is that area code near your location? Some cities (like Kansas City) straddle a state line and have different zip codes, area codes when crossing the state line but it's pretty much the same location.

I activated a phone this spring and was given an area code from Indianapolis. I live in New York.
Have been getting lots of spam calls.
