Received the wrong phone - Will this be a problem

    I recently ordered a (new) iPhone 11 using a $300 promo code. As filler, I also ordered a TCL 30 Z.

I know the TCL is a crap phone, but I had no intentions of using it. I figured I would just toss it in a drawer and I might find a use for it sometime in the future.

Anyway, today a box arrives with a tracking number different from what TF had sent me. Inside was a Moto G Play 2023, which apparently was just released in the last couple of months. The kicker is that inside the box was a SIM kit for Boost Mobile. Seems that the fulfillment company was not paying any attention to what they're shipping out. FWIW, the paperwork seems to be correct, as the shipping insert says they sent a TCL device.

I have another package arriving tomorrow, presumably with the iPhone. Hopefully they don't mess that one up.

Anyway, I'm not unhappy, as the moto is a superior phone, specs-wise. It's still a low-end phone, but it's a great value for what I paid (zero).

Could this cause any future problems? I have no intention of activating it with any carrier. If I do use it, it will be only as a wifi device.

    Wow, that is a mistake.

Either someone ordered that and someone else is going to get your TCL, or the fulfillment center did accidentally gave you the wrong phone.

This is going to be a hard thing to figure out then.

I bet that phone is locked to Boost tho, but hard to know tho.

Yeah, it's locked. I tried my T-Mobile SIM and was not able to get any service.

No big deal, since I really don't need the phone. I may just plug it in and use it as a bedside clock, haha.

How much do you want for it with Sim kit together?

Another un-activated use for it is as a flashlight. I have been keeping an old phone charged just for that purpose.

So this is interesting. I received the iPhone today, brand new and sealed in the box. The SIM card is taped to the exterior.

I seem to recall that many iphones don't get locked until a carrier sim is installed.

Is it possible that I could use this immediately with TMobile without having to activate it on TF? Just wondering. The model number is MM683LL/A, but there doesn't seem to be much specific info to be found. There's no indication that this is specific to TF.

If somehow it works with T-Mobile, will it then be locked to TMobile? I wouldn't complain if it were.

EDIT: Never mind. I did an IMEI lookup and it confirmed that it was in fact locked to TF. No big deal, I'll just need to activate it and toss it in a drawer for 60 days.

Interesting and slightly alarming, at least they didn’t mess up your iPhone order! I don’t see anything wrong with just keeping it. Not like TF would be able to help you fix it anyway, hah.

And looks like you already found out but TF iPhones are not flex reseller activation policies. They’re already locked to TF.

I believe iPhones sold at bestbuy do the flex lock activation thing -- that way BestBuy can stock iPhones and sell it to you with whatever carrier SIM they want and it locks to that SIM. But ones from specific carriers are still locked to that carrier from the beginning.

Funny thing is, the iPhone shipment arrived WITH the TCL phone that I originally ordered. So I have no idea why they shipped the Moto.

Makes sense. What got me wondering was the google results for that SKU showed a number of places selling that phone as Unlocked. Made me think that it was somehow factory-unlocked.
