Dish to conduct 5G tests at 800 MHz

“The Internet wasn’t meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so it’s insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead — it’s a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.” John Legere 1/5/2017

So it sounds like T-Mobile is letting Dish sample the 800 MHz spectrum in Arizona. So I’m guessing if all goes good they’ll buy it?

I’d be surprised if Dish could spend any more money on anything but deploying their current spectrum. With the recent increase in interest rates aren’t they supposed to be feeling the pinch?

I suppose I'm just not seeing the point of spending three and a half billion dollars on a measly 5x5 MHz channel of lowband spectrum that can't even be aggregated with n71, unless of course Dish starts requiring OEMs to include sub-1 GHz inter-band aggregation support.

Seems like those billions would be far better-spent on building out and densifying the network.

I do agree the funding will the biggest hurdle, since they already did a round at slightly lower rates.

However, I do not see anyone else actually using it other than the cable companies and I doubt they will want to spend a ton just for it even at auction.

Anyone else would have to upgrade their tower equipment again to use it, which would delay use for another few years. Dish has a lot of n26 equipment already deployed in markets according to vendor specs, just not active. They are in the best position to at least have it broadcasting within a year.
