    Metro by T-Mobile:128GB Google Pixel 6a + 30-Days Service: New Line $90, Port-In $65

    https://slickdeals.net/f/16644218-me...t-in-65?page=1

How good is this deal? $49.99 for phone + $40 for one month of service = $90, let plan expire, wait 180 days from original purchase, and you have an unlocked Pixel 6a. It would be $65 with an eligible port in.

Is it worth it to have an unlocked 6a by November, 2023? The 6a was released July, 2022.

Possible issues with the 6a aside, it seems a reasonable price for an unlocked, usable on any network phone, that is scheduled to get Android updates until July 2025 and security updates until July 2027.
I'm tempted to try it, because I like playing with different phones when I can get them for cheap.

    thats a great deal.

in most states dealers would be legally required to charge sales taxes on the full retail price since they are getting reimbursed the rebates as opposed to 'discounted' which a corporate store on or online purchase would be. i believe unless things have changed a minimum $ 50 plan is required for port in pricing at retail locations. so may not much if any saving going to a store to do a port in as opposed to paying the $ 49.99.

if anyone does this I am very interested if this is a T-Mobile/Metro branded device with carrier 'crapware', etc. or if it has the clean generic Pixel experience.

a note on the unlocking. it has always been official policy that devices most be in continuous use for 180 days to unlock, although the system has been 'broken' for several years and devices have unlocked as long as they remain active through the 14 day return window. there is always the chance the system could be fixed before the 180 days. i would guess chances are unlikely but possible.

I didn't buy the Metro 6a because I already have a factory unlocked 6a. The following 2 posts are in the slickdeals thread about the Metro 6a.

You're off the mark on that. This post #341 in the Slickdeals thread said he couldn't even use his Metro Pixel 6a with a SIM from T-mo (Metro's parent company). This post #389 said his Metro 6a didn't work with a Verizon SIM.

Well both could be different mechanisms,TMO could just internally ban the IMEI except when use through Metro

and VZW may not have it whitelisted ?

But OK, I concede it's possible TMO was able to strongarm Google into departing from its usual policy.

My Fi, Visible and Mint purchased Pixels - all **heavily** subsidised - arrived unlocked OOTB

T-Mobile and Metro now share handset inventories at the warehouse level. everything is 'unlocked' for both carriers but the IMEI's are assigned to one or the other and Metro sold phones will not work on T-Mobile(or believe T-Mobile MVNO's) until such time as they also qualify for carrier unlock. Using a third party to hack/unlock the device early will not help except to use on a completely different network.

Most(some retail boxed prepaid phones may be an exception - at least if never activated on T-Mobile prepaid) T-Mobile sold phones will work on Metro from the day they are sold.

I received my 6a yesterday. I tried a FreedomPop sim (free Walmart plan) and a boom red sim. Neither were accepted.
I guess I'll see what happens in 6 months.

did you get a message indicating the device was locked ? or would the service just not connect ?
