Report: T-Mobile Moves On from Best Buy

As reported by The Mobile Report, the Un-carrier is ending its partnership with Best Buy after just two years. The information comes from a Reddit post but was confirmed by the publication. The report says that the wireless carrier has decided not to renew its contract.

    So what happens next?

“The Internet wasn’t meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so it’s insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead — it’s a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.” John Legere 1/5/2017

I suspect that it comes down to cost of business. T-Mobile has built out a few more physical locations of their own, and still has WalMart and some resellers. TBH, there are more Walmarts than BestBuys around, although one would have more choices at BestBuy.
Ironically, with fees going up on devices ($35 activation) and now 'yearly' upgrade plans, I'm not entirely sure what their thought is.
    AT&T... your world, throttled.

Simple, BestBuy was demanding too high a cut off activations, much higher customer acquisition costs compared to alternatives, cut into their (tight) margins too much.

Also TMO not making money itself off the device sale.

Can't keep alive long term without decent margins one way or another, and operating B&M stores is a huge burden

This is true. Apple sells their own, Walmart sells some, TMobile has their own + MetroPCS, Costco sells some and there are some independents/authorized retailers left. Foot traffic in stores still exists, but online is much less cost for them.

They're the last tech store standing. Circuit City, Radio Shack and Fry's all gone. Vendors rent space (Samsung, LG, Google, HP, etc).

Somebody has to stay open so all the cheapskates can go look over the merchandise before going online and buying.

Seriously, I buy a lot of items online, but for TV's and appliances and so forth I prefer to shop local stores, especially when I spend a good amount of time in the store comparing features. I also like to support local employees in the community when it's reasonably practical.

Actually I look online and do my research online then go to a local store to buy. Unless it's not available in a local store. I'd rather pay more then the hassle of online returns or scams.

The biggest problem in the small/medium sized metro area where I live is availability of particular models from any local retailers.

I purchased (with good deal on exchange - better than T-Mobile) through Samsung, which actually allows you to pickup at ... BestBuy. Similarly, no $35 activation 'fee'.

That is the big problem with stores - especially in small towns. It's very expensive to purchase a lot of devices, most of which end up being replaced with a newer model in less than a year.
Typically only corporate stores and places like BestBuy will display demo models.
