Bizarre.
$50/mo is not cheap these days, you'd think they would offer better device options, if not free then decent discounts, from expensive phones.

T-Mobile is looking to gain ground in the prepaid market with an offer for locations in their “Small Market/Rural Area” designation. This is a targeted offer for specific stores, so you will need to be sure your local location has access to the offer if you find it’s right for you.
All deals require the activation of a new prepaid line of service on the $50 Unlimited 5G rate plan at minimum. Since it is prepaid, be prepared to pay that $50 up front. There is also a $10 charge for the SIM card, as well as any additional taxes and fees.
If you port a number in from an eligible carrier at activation, you can get the Samsung A14 5G for free. An interesting caveat is that Metro by T-Mobile is an eligible carrier this time around. Again, it is worth a call to your local store to see if your current carrier is eligible, especially if it is an MVNO using T-Mobile’s network.

“The Internet wasn’t meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so it’s insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead — it’s a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.” John Legere 1/5/2017

for years there was talk(internally) of selling Metro in T-Mobile branded store in rural areas. from what I had heard the dealer put up a lot of resistance concerned about the time and effort to sell a far less profitable product than the postpaid options they were used too.
i'm no longer privy to the inside information at T-Mobile/Metro but maybe they decided to pivot to put a renewed emphasis around T-Mobile prepaid brand instead of bringing Metro in. T-Mobile prepaid did at least in the past and may still pay dealers substantially higher compensation than Metro so there could be less resistance from dealers, but the trade off was always less traffic due to less aggressive handset promos.
I have never set foot in any provider store this millennium, except iirc twice to pick up a SIM.
You'd have to pay me lot to bother doing so these days. Pretty sure back in the late 80's even my first Micro TAC was shipped in to my employer.
Except maybe dropping off a returned device, to save packing it up and shipping.
T-Mobile still offers a free phone (in-store only) with purchase of a $100 refill. Choice of phones is limited but if you're already a customer and need a refill anyway...Nowadays I get my phones from Metro or Tracfone but it's nice to have an additional option.
Get your choice of a free Samsung Galaxy A03, Motorola moto g 5G or a REVVL 6 5G when you buy two months of unlimited talk, text and high-speed data on our most popular plan—just $50/mo.
Plus applicable tax. Limited time offer; subject to change & while supplies last. In-store only. Must purchase eligible device & $100+ of qualifying service in same transaction. $10 SIM starter kit may be required. Not combinable with some offers or discounts.
I don't think these "free" phones are hardly ever worth the increased service cost.
