Decommissioning one of two TracFone phones.

I currently have two phones on TracFone plans, one an iPhone XS and the other an old, cheap LG that I keep for emergency backup. My iPhone runs out of days near the end of October, and I’m planning on trading it for a new iPhone 15 and signing it up on my husband’s T-Mobil 55+ plan, so abandoning TF for this, while keeping TF on the backup LG.

I’m just wondering about the optimal way to handle this. I could let T-Mobil assign a new number (since I almost never give out the iPhone’s number; I just have Google Voice forwarding to it). I think it’s safer to transfer the number, but I don’t know how long it takes for TF to process that (and don’t even recall whether I have any sort of lock on it).

I also have two older, inactive TracFones showing on my account, and would prefer my iPhone not wind up in the same stare.

    All advice and suggestions welcome.

If you don't care about the phone number, I wouldn't bother to port it. It can be done quickly if you have all of the information. But you have to have the correct account number, and the correct zip code along with a number transport PIN.

If you do want to port, and you need more information on how to get those, just ask.

In regards to the previous inactive devices, first of all, you may be able to login to your account via the Tracfone app on your iPhone and just select those devices with a long press and see if it gives you the option to delete them from the account. That's the easiest way.

If not, you can just chat with customer service, and tell them you want the inactive devices removed. They'll just send a text to your backup phone to verify the account and then they'll delete any inactives that you have.

If AT&T works for you and have an unlocked phone, take a look at this for your back up.

Yes do not bother porting unless you actually WANT to keep the number.

Getting a new number issued by TMO when activating a new line will make the process much simpler, thus "safer" and smoother.

There is no harm leaving inactive devices in MyAccount, but it's also easy to remove them as stated.

Check your iPhone is SIM unlocked before it goes inactive

I’m not sure what you mean by this. My current iPhone was unlocked, bought directly from Apple, with my previous TF SIM put into it. The new one will also be unlocked (the $30 premium for an unlocked phone is worth it to avoid the hassle), but will be eSIM only, so I can’t just transfer my current SIM.
