AT&T and T-Mobile are in a heated race to space

SpaceX (T-Mobile's partner) and AST SpaceMobile (AT&T's partner) are both rushing to launch satellites that can connect to customers' existing phones. But cash and federal approvals are just some of the problems they're facing.

“The Internet wasn’t meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so it’s insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead — it’s a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.” John Legere 1/5/2017

It sounds like a good kind of umbrella coverage for the network. No signal but clear site of the sky? You can still send a text and eventually voice and data.

I think there will be strength though in having mixes of communication mediums like Fiber, Macros, Small Cells, Microwave, Low Band, High Band (is that a thing?) etc…

I still want every foot of desert and Wilderness covered in 5G Macro sites, but no people, no roads no coverage is the conventional wisdom and it makes sense.

I guess soon the only option to be off the grid will be to leave your phone at home and ride a bicycle.

Until those get regulated into having GPS and OnStar with a sensor to lock the wheels and call the Sheriff on you if you are too wobbly.

Who’s going to win? SpaceX or SpaceMobile?
