1980 Z-28 which got ripped off; got good money for it from my insurance; was found a day after I got the check; kept the money because nobody in their right mind would give me the amount of money my insurance co. did!

The first car I purchased was back in 1992, a brand new aqua-marine 2 door Chevy Cavalier, 5 speed with black trim, grey cloth interior, and an AM/FM radio, power steering, power brakes, AC, and a rear defroster as the only options.

First car with a stick, but not the last.

Man if I had a Grand National as my first car, I probably wouldn't have lived to own a second!

I've paid cash for all my cars, the first was a used AMC Spirit (a not-quite-so-ugly cousin of the Pacer) my sophmore year of H.S., back in the early 80s. It's was a P.O.S. but quite reliable.

For sh*ts and giggles I put a bumper sticker on it that said: URBAN ASSUALT VEHICLE. Then I rerouted the washer fluid pump to suck out tranny fluid and spray it into the carb which produced an instant white smoke screen with the push of a button! =)

Excuse my ignorance, but what's so special about that car? I checked some classifieds and saw them going for $20000-30000. Pretty expensive for a 17-18 year old car.

    I googled found this:

    Engines: Grand National: 3.8L V6 Turbo 245 bhp @ 4400 rpm, 355 ft-lb @ 2000 rpm. GNX: 3.8L V6 Turbo 276 bhp @ 4400 rpm, 360 ft-lb @ 3000 rpm.

Sure, they're pretty powerful, but they're not all that powerful...anything else that makes them so special? How much did they cost back then?

Actually.. look at the torque figures, its unbelievable. Especially for a car manufactured in the 80's!

A girl I used to date in highschool, her father had GNX and an NSX (must've loved his, x's..) I went for a ride in it, it was RIDICULOUS

those figures are likely understated as the general didn't want some freakin buick regal to appear more powerful than the L98 'vette (it was faster than a vette too)

the grand national was one of those rare cars from gm that was really special, but the geniuses there decide to kill off just when things were starting to get good (alante, syclone/typhoon, zr1, fiero, imapala ss, f-body)

my first car, my dad's old sometime in the 80's caprice classic... think that's where my appreciation for V8 RWD cars came from... it was huge on the outside and tiny on the inside (front bench seat too!), had pathetic gas mileage, really floaty ride (the term "boat" applies fittingly here), a little scary in the winter (gotta sandbag it), slow and ugly as sin, but there's just something about a torquey v8 and rwd even in this application
