second gsm provider comes to rest of carolinas

I drove over I-85 this morning and did one of my periodic manual network searches. I found USA 49, which I can only assume is SunCom. Coverage was only near the interstate. This was near Anderson, SC. Looks like there'll finally be a second GSM competitor for the rest of the Carolinas [yeah, i know ATTWS is already in parts of NC]...

    USA 49

is there any more information on USA 49? such as, when they will allow roaming on it?

i'm on Cingular now. Barely get 1 bar near windows roaming on Voicestream. But when I did a network search, USA49 comes in really strong, 3-5 bars.

i'm excited, hopefully i can roam soon so i don't even have to think about GAIT?

I'm fairly sure this has to be ATTWS, b/c I dont think T-mobile owns any spectrum in this area and I havent heard about any little carriers around here.

USA-49 is definitely SunCom. But SunCom is part of AT&T so you could say that it is AT&T.

wow. really old thread brought back.

here's what i know about suncom's gsm. it's about to launch commercially in VA. the network should be open for AT&T's roamers by the end of the year, if it isn't already. roaming with cingular isn't allowed right now, but i know cingular has a roaming agreement with suncom [for their tdma customers travelling to the carolinas]. suncom will also need cingulars coverage to sucessfullly launch gsm in the carolinas, given there is no analog backup and GAIT probably won't be used.

as far as t-mobile owning spectrum in this area... they do. rumors have it that they're coming in the next six months to the carolinas.

and suncom is NOT a part of AT&T. suncom [triton pcs] is an entirely seperate company, but has a marketing agreement with ATTWS. once again, speculation has it that AT&T will purchase suncom in Jan.
